Binary Converter: Understand Computer Language
Learn how decimal numbers are represented in binary, how binary place values work, and how to convert common numbers such as 5, 10, and 65.
What Is Binary?
Binary is a number system that uses only two digits: 0 and 1. Digital computers use binary representation because electronic systems can reliably represent two basic states.
How Binary Place Values Work
Unlike decimal numbers, which use powers of 10, binary uses powers of 2.
Starting from the right, the place values are:
1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128...
Each position represents another power of two.
Example: Decimal 5
The number 5 can be represented as 4 + 1.
Therefore:
5 = 101
The digits represent 4, 2, and 1. The 4 and 1 positions are enabled, while the 2 position is not.
Example: Decimal 10
Ten can be represented as 8 + 2.
Therefore:
10 = 1010
Example: Decimal 65
Sixty-five can be represented as 64 + 1.
Therefore:
65 = 1000001
Binary and Computer Data
Binary representation appears throughout computing, including numbers, memory, storage, machine instructions, and encoded data.
Understanding binary is useful when studying computer science, programming, networking, digital electronics, and data representation.
Binary to Decimal
Conversion can also work in the opposite direction. For example, the binary number 1010 represents 8 + 2, which equals decimal 10.
