File Size Converter: Understand Storage Better
Understand bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, and the difference between decimal and binary storage units.
What Is File Size?
File size describes how much digital storage space a file uses. It is commonly measured using units such as bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, and terabytes.
Basic File Size Units
A byte is a basic unit of digital information. Larger units are created by grouping bytes.
However, there are two common systems for describing larger storage units: decimal and binary.
Decimal Storage Units
In the decimal system, each unit is based on 1,000:
- 1 KB = 1,000 bytes
- 1 MB = 1,000 KB
- 1 GB = 1,000 MB
- 1 TB = 1,000 GB
This decimal system is commonly used for storage device capacities and many file-size displays.
Binary Storage Units
Binary units use powers of 1,024:
- 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes
- 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB
- 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB
- 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB
The binary prefixes KiB, MiB, GiB, and TiB are useful when you need to distinguish binary measurements from decimal measurements.
Why Do File Sizes Sometimes Look Different?
Different operating systems, applications, websites, and storage manufacturers may display sizes using different conventions. This can make a file or storage device appear to have a slightly different size depending on where you look.
Examples
A file reported as 5 MB in the decimal system represents 5,000,000 bytes.
A file reported as 5 MiB represents 5 × 1,048,576 bytes.
These values are close but not identical because the underlying unit definitions are different.
